Rain is NOT the Solution

The cities of Arroyo Grande and Pismo Beach have continued to pour their attention into water conservation efforts in response to diminishing water sources both locally and across the state. California faces a state of emergency and is in the midst of a severe drought that is greatly affecting our citizens. The residents of Arroyo Grande and Pismo Beach can play a significant role in aiding these efforts by changing daily practices for the greater benefit of our community. The average family in California uses 140-170 gallons per individual per day, with 50% of annual consumption going to landscape maintenance, 20% to toilet flushing, and 18% to showers. With a little effort, these facets of water use can easily be minimized.

The Cities of Arroyo Grande and Pismo Beach have created many programs to make the process of conservation simpler for our residents and business owners, including appliance rebates, irrigation programs and Cash for Grass. The Cities also stress the importance of complying with the mandatory restrictions that are in place, including following the outdoor lawn watering schedule, limiting car washing, patio and driveway cleaning, and not using any more water than necessary to maintain the quality of a landscape. Conservationists suggest watering plants less often with more water to save resources and ensure deeper roots, in addition to purchasing spring-loaded shutoff nozzles for hoses as examples of the many ways small changes can aid greater efforts. There are countless ways you can contribute significantly to water conservation efforts while saving money, and many tips can be found at our new Water Conservation website, www.thinkh2onow.com.

In order to emphasize and assist our community in conserving water, Arroyo Grande and Pismo Beach have joined forces to create Think H20, a campaign aimed at awareness and action towards long-term water conservation habits. The overarching goal of Think H2O is to “conserve today to preserve tomorrow,” by instilling helpful daily practices in citizen’s routines. The Cities of Arroyo Grande and Pismo Beach thank our citizens for their ongoing conservation efforts, and know we have the potential to make a difference for the future.
